My last official DALLAS TURKEY TROT (8 miles) was way back in 1981. Just did one of them.
It was one of my major steps to running marathons. I NEVER started jogging with running a MARATHON AS MY GOAL. My goal was to get healthy and lose some weight.
While working with a Christian company for three years, I got three fellow employees hooked on golf. We played about twice a month together, usually on weekends. On one particular round, I was preparing to hit my next shot, when all of a sudden the SHARPEST PAIN I have ever felt in my life hit me right smack dab in the middle of my heart. The pain was so severe that it took my breath away, and it felt like someone was using a six-inch needle pushing down, then up a little on my heart. This up and down sensation continued for three or four iterations. I dropped to the ground holding my chest.
My golf buddies rushed to my aid to see what was wrong. I remember they looked somewhat blurry to me as I looked up at them, and I remember praying, “GOD, IF YOU WILL GIVE ME MORE TIME, I PROMISE TO TAKE BETTER CARE OF MYSELF.” God honored my prayer, and I held up my promise. I went from 187 pounds to 146 pounds, and folks at church kept asking if they could pray for me. They thought I had cancer, since my face was so gaunt. I was RUNNING, not jogging, anywhere from 40 to 60 miles a week. One of my personality traits has always been “TYPE A”. Everything is a competition or event. So, why would walking, jogging, and running be any different?
I started out RUNNING (diff between jogging and running is you can’t talk when running. hurts to talk.)
a bunch of 10 K’s(6.2 miles). The TURKEY TROT came along, and I figured, what the heck. If I can run 6.2 miles, surely I can jog 8 miles, and I did. Then, there was the MUENSTER(spelling) FUN RUN of 10+ miles, and I ran that one. Then, there was the WHITEROCK LAKE 20K(12.4 miles). Shortly after that run, there was the DALLAS WHITEROCK HALF-MARATHON(13.1 miles), and I ran that one.
Somebody at work joking said, “Hey Pete. If you can do a HALF-MARATHON, you should be able to do an entire marathon – right?” Then, I ran the 1982 DALLAS WHITEROCK MARATHON (one month before Mom passed away), COWTOWN MARATHON 1983(3 months after WHITEROCK 1982), 1983 DALLAS WHITEROCK MARATHON, and finally the 1984 DALLAS WHITEROCK MARATHON. My “X” says I started jogging around our block in cowboy boots, then Walmart shoes, where I quickly got a really bad case of “SHIN SPLINTS”.
That’s when I started traveling around the country teaching, eating like a king, and running less.
God has a tremendous sense of humor. As we age, our body metabolism slows down, and our love and appreciation for great food increases, accompanied with lower amounts of exercise. The result is an expanded waist line.
Now, I don’t believe I could possibly even WALK 8 MILES. Last time I walked 3 miles, I went to the doctor for SEVERE PAIN IN MY SCIATIC(spelling) NERVE, and that was three or four weeks ago.
However, that sounds like a great challenge for the two of us for next year. I could walk 8 miles on Maui, and you walk the 8 mile Dallas Turkey Trot here. Better be listening to one of my all-time favorite songs as we train for our 2014 TURKEY TROT, “HIGH HOPES” sung by Frank Sinatra and a little boy from the movie “Pal Joey”.
